How to get an AI or machine learning internship as a student
Where AI and ML internships are posted, what to learn first, the projects that stand out, and how to apply so your application gets read.
An internship is one of the most common ways into an AI career, and one can lead to a full-time offer. Here is a practical plan for finding one and making your application count.
1. Know where internships are posted
Many companies post internships on their own career boards, often months before the start date. Titles vary. Search for "machine learning intern", "data science intern", "AI research intern", "applied scientist intern" and "analytics intern" rather than one phrase.
2. Learn the foundations interviewers test
You do not need to know everything, but you do need solid basics:
- Python with NumPy and pandas.

3. Build one or two projects you can explain end to end
Interviewers remember a project you understand deeply more than a list of tutorials. A strong student project has:
- A clear question you chose yourself.
- Data you collected or cleaned, with notes on its limits.
- A simple baseline, then a better model, and the numbers for both.
- An honest evaluation, including where the model fails.
- A short README or demo someone can try.
4. Tailor every application
Read each posting and move the most relevant project and skills to the top of your résumé. Use the posting's own words where they truthfully describe what you did. Keep a copy of your original résumé, and never claim experience you do not have.
5. Apply early and keep track
Internships often fill in order, so apply soon after a role is posted and keep a simple record of where you applied and when to follow up.
