Starting and learning

Machine learning for interview

Machine learning interviews test whether you can frame a prediction problem, choose a split and metric, avoid leakage and explain why one model beats another. Expect questions on bias and variance, regularisation, evaluation metrics, feature engineering and a walk-through of a project you built.

What machine learning interviews ask about, with real systems

Recommendation and feed design

System design rounds often ask you to design a recommender or feed. Interviewers expect a candidate generation stage, a ranking stage, the features each uses and how you would measure success offline and online.

Real exampleDeep Neural Networks for YouTube RecommendationsGoogle researchers describe YouTube's recommender as a deep candidate generation model followed by a separate deep ranking model, with lessons from running it at scale.

Click and conversion prediction

Predicting whether a user clicks is a standard case for logistic regression at scale, calibration and rare positives. Expect to discuss features, class imbalance and monitoring after launch.

Real exampleAd Click Prediction: a View from the TrenchesThis Google paper presents case studies from a deployed system that predicts ad click-through rates, built on an online logistic regression learner (FTRL-Proximal).

Data leakage and evaluation

A common question describes a model that scores suspiciously well and asks what went wrong. Leakage from future data, duplicated records or preprocessing fitted on the test set is the usual answer, so know how to split by time or by group.

Real exampleLeakage and the Reproducibility Crisis in ML-based ScienceKapoor and Narayanan found data leakage errors in 17 scientific fields, collectively affecting 329 papers, and propose model info sheets to catch leakage.

Machine learning in production

Senior interviews ask how a model behaves after deployment: data drift, feedback loops, monitoring and retraining. Naming these risks shows you have thought beyond the notebook.

Real exampleHidden Technical Debt in Machine Learning SystemsThis NeurIPS 2015 paper from Google lists risks specific to machine learning systems, including entanglement, hidden feedback loops, undeclared consumers and data dependencies.

Retrieval and language models

Roles that work with language models ask how you would answer questions from company documents: chunking, embeddings, retrieval and how you would evaluate the answers.

Real exampleRetrieval-Augmented Generation (Lewis et al.)The paper introduces RAG models that combine a pretrained sequence-to-sequence model with a neural retriever over a dense vector index of Wikipedia.

Can you prepare for a machine learning interview?

Yes. Interviews test a fairly stable set of skills: Python and data handling, core models and their trade-offs, evaluation, and a project you can explain in depth. Revise the fundamentals first, then practise explaining your projects and a system design out loud.

  1. Python, NumPy and pandasExpect live coding: grouping, joining, handling missing values and writing clean functions without looking up every call.Learn it in Data Tools
  2. Statistics and probabilityDistributions, sampling, hypothesis tests and A/B testing, often as short worked problems in data scientist interviews.Learn it in Statistics
  3. Core models and evaluationBias and variance, regularisation, tree ensembles, cross-validation, and choosing precision, recall or AUC for the problem.Learn it in Machine Learning
  4. Deep learning and language modelsFor engineering and research roles: backpropagation, optimisers, convolutional networks, transformers and how you would fine-tune or evaluate a model.Learn it in Deep Learning
  5. Project walk-throughPrepare one project end to end: the decision it served, the split, the baseline, what failed and what you would change.

Moving into a machine learning role through interviews

If you already work in the field

Software engineers already bring coding and system design; add statistics, evaluation and one project on real data to show you can judge a model. If you come from a domain such as finance or healthcare, lead with a project in that domain and be ready to code live.

If you come from data science or ML

If you already work in data science or machine learning, interviews for a new role probe depth: why you chose a model, how you checked for leakage and what happened after launch. Prepare honest numbers and failure stories from your own work.

Tools you will use

ToolWhat you use it for
scikit-learnCovers the classical models, pipelines, cross-validation and metrics that interview questions are built around.
pandasHandles the joins, group-bys and missing values that come up in take-home and live coding tasks.
PyTorchBuilds and trains neural networks for deep learning questions and coding rounds.
JupyterKeeps a clean, rerunnable notebook of your project to walk an interviewer through.

Public data to practise on

  • Bank Marketing: Phone marketing records labelled with whether the client subscribed; its call-duration column is a classic leakage case to discuss.
  • Adult: Census attributes labelled with whether income exceeds a threshold, useful for practising classification, imbalance and fairness questions.

Your first project

Download the Bank Marketing dataset, predict term-deposit subscription with logistic regression after removing the call-duration column, and compare it with a majority-class baseline using ROC AUC and recall.

Common questions

What questions are asked in a machine learning interview?

Common topics are the bias-variance trade-off, overfitting and regularisation, metrics for imbalanced classes, how random forests and gradient boosting work, feature engineering and leakage. Many interviews add live coding and a system design or project discussion.

Do machine learning interviews include LeetCode-style coding?

Many machine learning engineer interviews include at least one general coding round on data structures and algorithms. Data scientist interviews more often test SQL, pandas and statistics. Ask the recruiter for the format.

How should I explain a machine learning project in an interview?

Start with the problem, then the data and how you split it, the baseline, the model and why you chose it, the metric and what you would do next. Be precise about your own contribution and about results you actually measured.

What is a machine learning system design interview?

You design an end-to-end system such as a feed ranker, fraud detector or search engine. Interviewers look for problem framing, data and labels, features, model choice, offline and online evaluation, and monitoring after launch.
