Use the free layer first

What is different about an early-career résumé

Your projects carry the weight, which means they need the treatment a job gets: what the problem was, what you built, what it did. 'Built a recommendation system' is a category; 'built a recommendation system for a 3,000-item catalogue, evaluated against a popularity baseline' is evidence.

AI tailoring is weakest exactly here, because it has no way to know what your project actually did. This is where an invented metric appears — and an invented claim is worse early in a career, not better, because a first technical interview is mostly the interviewer walking through your résumé.

Listing coursework is fine. Listing it in a way that reads like a job is not, and some tools will reshape it that way to fill space.

What not to pay for while studying

• Auto-applyVolume is not the constraint on an early-career search. A bot also cannot answer work-authorisation and sponsorship questions for you, and for students those answers matter enormously.
• Anything sold on an 'ATS score'No third-party tool reads an employer's applicant tracking system. The score is the vendor's model of relevance — a prompt to look again, not a gate you passed.
• Annual plansYour search will be months, not years. Match the billing to it and set a cancellation reminder.
• Interview-answer generatorsFor a first interview you need to be able to talk about your own projects. Practice is the tool.

Worth it when you are applying regularly and want discovery, tailoring and tracking in one place: a feed of the whole catalogue ranked against your own skills and title, saved jobs, an application tracker, and AI reviews whose suggested edits must each quote an exact passage of your uploaded résumé.
